#reviewoftheweek / Greg Laswell - Everyone Thinks I Dodged A Bullet
One of the most solid musicians making music these days is Greg Laswell. You can always be guaranteed to be impressed with each collection of music he puts out. Never one to have broken out into the mainstream, Laswell's music stays just below the radar enough to keep him intriguing and artistic, without having to cater to the demands of the music world. That being said, his latest is raw and insightful, showcasing his signature vocals and storyteller lyricism. The track "Dodged A Bullet" is a perfect display of just that, and other songs like "Out Of Line" use the lyrics as their bedrock. The album's lead single "Lifetime Ago" is the closing thing you'll get to a pop hit on this album, and it's about as close as you'll want to be with Laswell's music. In the truest sense, Greg Laswell is the epitome of a singer/songwriter, and 30 years we may look back at his body of work the way we look at Dylan and Simon and Cash.

CD REVIEW: Greg Laswell "Take A Bow"
On this album, Greg Laswell solidifies himself as a pop folk superstar. He has managed to put together another great album full of great songs that showcase his incredible lyricism and distinct voice. This album is a little darker sounding than the previous two and on "Come Clean" there is a bit of spookiness as well. The debut single, "Take Everything," could possibly become Laswell's most memorable song, and move him into the mainstream spotlight. Ingrid Michaelson also lends her vocals to the song, as well as several others on the album. Cary Brothers joins the mix as well, lending his background vocals to a few of the tracks. "Off I Go," a song that first appeared on the television show "Grey's Anatomy," makes its first appearance on a Laswell album, and is one of Laswell's most lyrically perfect songs. "In Front Of Me," "Marquee," and "Around The Bend" are all standout tracks, proving this album is full of incredible songs. Greg Laswell has managed to take folk rock music to a new level and has brought us a new album, which he also self produced, that is one of the best of the year.5.04.2010

CD REVIEW: Greg Laswell "Covers"
It's incredibly fun when a musician takes on a covers project. When they are able to put their own spin on very unique and classic songs, musicians can reignite a love for the original artist and at the same time increase their own fanbase infinitely. Greg Laswell is always good for a good cover song, and this time he takes on five incredibly unique songs by very different original artists. His take on Maxwell's "This Woman's Work" is beautiful and turns the classic R&B track into an acoustic ballad. He does wonders with Kristen Hersh's "Your Ghost" and Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon," turning them into tracks that could fool listeners into thinking they were his own. Laswell is a master musician. What he does, regardless of whether or not they are his original songs, is always surprising and outstanding.12.10.2009
