CD REVIEW: Trey Lockerbie "Light Therapy"

Light Therapy
Lockerbie is primed and ready for that outstanding debut full length album. This, however, is yet another pleasant tease, as his second EP contains only 4 songs. Lockerbie's style, reminiscent of artists such as Ari Hest and Mat Kearney, is subtle pop folk that borders on true alternative. Though this EP is subtle and mellow, it shows growth and strength compared to his debut which seemed more like just a single than a full EP. Comparatively, it seems that Lockerbie has found himself as a truly sophisticated songwriter, transcending typical pop tunes and putting together music that is hearty and tells a story. "Tacoma" is a killer track, showing off Lockerbie's lighter folk side while "Moving To Montauk" shows us that he's still a pop artist at heart, but with a bit more substance than the masses. Trey Lockerbie is a gem waiting to be discovered, and although these four songs are superb, when he finally releases a full length album, the artist as a whole will truly be realized by the world.

CD REVIEW: The Heyday "Till We See The Sun"

Till We See The Sun
As the Colorado music scene grows, The Heyday stand tall in the front of the line with two incredible independent releases as their resume. The latest of the two is a six song collection that further builds on the straightforward lyrical rock music that their debut album was filled with. There are two major standout tracks on the album, "Midnight Cold" and "Good Old Days." The second of those two stands to be the band's breakout hit, if radio gets smart and decides to play it. It's lyrically and musically accessible, as well as an organic composition showcasing the many talents of the band members. The Heyday are not to be underestimated, and in a few years time, if their songwriting continues to rock this much, they'll be selling out arenas and amphitheaters all over the USA.

CD REVIEW: John Craigie "Montana Tale"

Montana Tale
As an independent folk musician with a lot of songs under his belt, John Craigie has released one of his best albums to date. His newest, which features a handful of bay area musicians, shows off all the may facets of his musical repertoire. Zach Gill (ALO, Jack Johnson) lends his keyboarding talents to the album, which features styles ranging from country to mellow acoustic folk. The highlight of the album, and consequently the longest song on the disc, is "All Through Montana." A few of the other standouts on the disc are "Mama Nashville" and "Gone" which show Craigie's range as a musician and songwriter. John Craigie may have only been releasing music for the past six years but the release of this album makes him seem like it's been more like twenty-six.

CD REVIEW: The Clarks "Restless Days"

The Clarks have put in the time, for sure. They have finally returned with their first new album since releasing a career spanning retrospective of hits and fan favorites. Not ever gaining huge national recognition, the Clarks have amassed a huge fanbase who are among some of the most dedicated fans of any band. That being said, the have put together another solid album with a handful of excellent songs, including a stellar version of the classic tune "What A Wonderful World." Among the new classics that are featured on this album are "True Believe" and "Trampoline," both written and performed in the Clarks' indie pop style. You can't stop a band who does everything to the fullest with all their heart and soul, and the Clarks' newest album showcases that yet again.

CD REVIEW: Dan Craig "Alchemy"

Alchemy
Dan Craig, an independent artist, has put out a string of albums over the course of his short career. Contained within the albums is some of the best songwriting around. Up until now, Craig has cranked out a ton of excellent songs, but no he has put together the most solid album of his career. Though many of the songs are short and the album is only ten songs long, each song is perfectly written and the album is a whole is one of the best independent releases of the year. The title track is radio ready, but still nothing like anything you'll currently hear on air. Its energy, its lyrics, and its style are unique to Dan Craig, who after this album should finally get the mass recognition he deserves. "Enough," "Sunday Morning," and "Home Forever" are lyrical gems, highlights of the album, three of Craig's best songs to date. Dan Craig is a true artist when creating his music, with attention to detail unlike any other.

CD REVIEW: The Avett Brothers "Live, Vol. 3"

Live, Volume 3
The Avett Brothers could be one of the best live bands ever. It's true. It's most likely magnified, though, by the fact that this newest live release was recorded in their home state of North Carolina in front of hometown die hard fans. Well, that type of setting always makes for an excellent show, especially when combined with an awesome live band playing a plethera of hits and fan favorites. The disc features every facet of the Avett Brothers and the songs span the length of their career in the spotlight. Recorded about a month before the release of their most recent critically acclaimed studio album, the disc features four of the songs which were yet to be released. "I And Love And You" and "Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise,' two of the Avett's best songs ever get previewed at the show (and would become two hit singles at radio soon after) along with a hard hitting rendition of "Kick Drum Heart" (as part of the encore) and "The Perfect Space."  The Avett Brothers leave no stone unturned, even with Seth and Scott performing solo and acoustic. "Murder In The City," "Shame," "Colorshow" and "Paranoia in B Flat Major" are all included and are just as good, if not better, than their studio versions. The DVD companion to the album is the next best thing to being there and is a must have for anyone who wants to truly experience the Avett Brothers live show to the fullest extent in their living room. The Avett Brothers have finally brought everything they've been doing so awesomely to the masses and it's as close to perfection as you can get.

CD REVIEW: Elizabeth & The Catapult "The Other Side Of Zero"

The Other Side Of Zero
Indie and pop rock music meet at the intersection that is Elizabeth & The Catapult. The new album by the duo is head and shoulders above their debut album. Filled with catchy hooks and lyrically potent music, the new collection of songs features Elizabeth & The Catapult at their best. "You And Me" is the group's defining moment. It is a song that is equal parts accessible and indie gold. It is sure to be the song that catapults (no pun intended) these two into the spotlight. "Time (We All Fall Down)," "Open Book," and the title track are all highlights of and album is just as exciting as a whole as each of its eleven parts. Just as other indie duos have in the past (particularly Matt & Kim), this alum is going to have Elizabeth & The Catapult at the top of everyone's "best of what's next lists" and a handful of these songs are going to wind up on several "best of 2010" charts.

CD REVIEW: Matthew Mayfield "Matthew Mayfield & The Blue Cut Robbery"

Matthew Mayfield & The Blue Cut Robbery
Coming full circle, the latest EP released by Matthew Mayfield features return to rock music. With his new band, The Blue Cut Robbery, Mayfield cranks out some rockers that have not been heard from him since he began writing and recording music as a solo performer. "Swamp," "Shotgun," and "Good Girls" are Matthew Mayfield at the top of his rock game. He translates his folk rock roots and lyricism into pure rock and roll gold, proving that at the core of every great rock musician there is a singer/songwriter. It's doesn't matter the delivery system that is chosen, because Matthew Mayfield has the true makings of a superstar, and the songs on this new EP are proving that point well.
